wood, or in the case of yamato and 1st hokage, trees/plants are living organisms. These guys are creating life by using spiritual+physical energy. Something only the Sage of the 6 paths did more efficiently. I guess it has something to do with the fact that they are using life (wood) to control another life form (bijuu).
What other characters in this manga have been able/mentioned to use a jutsu that creates life and not just re-animate or possess corpses/shadows/elements? the true power of mokuton is unleashed when used against/with the bijuu me thinks.
and if the conditions are right, life can evolve (like when naruto''s chakra reacted to zetsu). I'd wager that 1st hokage's mokuton would turn into some kind of super hard/dense ceramic type living material when it reacts to all the bijuu. kinda like that bone cage the kyuubi is in now.
